Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accreditation

In August 2006, the Institute for Public-Private Partnerships, (IP3) was approved by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) to be a sponsor of continuing professional education (CPE) credits for the National Registry of CPE Sponsors.

NASBA CPE LOGO

The Institute for Public-Private Partnerships (IP3) is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be addressed to:

The National Registry of CPE Sponsors

Continuing Professional Education (CPE) is the term used to describe the education activities that assist Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) in achieving and maintaining quality in professional services. An explosion of relevant knowledge, ongoing changes and expansion, and increasing complexity of business transactions characterizes the profession of accountancy. To keep up with this dynamic environment requires CPAs to continuously maintain and enhance their knowledge, skills, and abilities by participating in training to earn required CPEs.

Developed in 1990, the National Registry of CPE Sponsors is a program offered by NASBA to recognize CPE program sponsors (over 1,400) who provide continuing professional education programs in accordance with nationally recognized standards. The names of approved CPE program sponsors are published in a listing distributed throughout the country via the Internet and in printed format. State Boards of Accountancy and their licensees can refer to this listing to identify and select CPE program sponsors.

Key benefits of the National Registry of CPE Sponsors:

  • Allows CPE program sponsors to register on a national basis instead of with individual boards of accountancy.
  • Provides CPA licensees with a listing of quality CPE program sponsors that conduct programs in compliance with state accountancy boards requirements and the uniform standards for continuing education in the accounting profession.
  • Recognizes approved organizations by publishing their names on a list that is distributed periodically and appears in the CPE Registry Sponsor Listing tab on the NASBA Tools.com site.
  • Identifies CPE program sponsors who issue certificates of completion and maintain appropriate records for licensees.
  • Improves the overall quality of CPE.

Currently IP3 is approved only for "group-live" courses, which means the courses we conduct in a classroom setting (online courses are not yet approved for CPEs). Depending on the length of the course (and completion of other requirements) will determine the actual number of CPEs earned. For a 10-day course, participants can earn up to 57 CPEs.

IACET CEU Accreditation

Since July 2001 (reauthorized in 2006 through July, 2011), IP3 has been approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), 8405 Greensboro Drive, Suite 800, McLean, VA 22102.IACET Logo In obtaining this approval, IP3 has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standards which are widely recognized as standards of good practice internationally. As a result of their Authorized Provider membership status, IP3 is authorized to offer IACET CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standards. CEUs can be used for maintenance of professional affiliation with an institution or professional advancement in organizations.

Below is a brief description (authored by IACET) of the purpose, definition, and ownership of the CEU, the Authorized Provider program of IACET, and the requirements of IACET to become and Authorized Provider of IACET CEUs. Additional information may be found at IACET's website at www.iacet.org.

CEUs in Detail
Purpose of the CEU · Provide a standard unit of measure
· Quantify continuing adult education and training activities
· Accommodate for the diversity of providers, activities, and purposes in adult education.
Definition One CEU = ten contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience, under responsible, qualified direction and instruction.
Ownership

The International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) is the caretaker of the CEU. IACET assumes responsibility for refining and disseminating information about the CEU. Through its programs, publications, research, and technical assistance, the Association assists organizations in correctly utilizing the criteria.

Only Authorized Providers may use the IACET CEU logo. The traditional CEU is in the public domain and many organizations use the term, but may not be following the IACET Criteria. Some consumers distrust the value of the CEU for this reason. Consumers trust the IACET Authorized Provider's use of the CEU because they know that they have been reviewed and site visited to become an Authorized Provider and that they must follow the IACET CEU Criteria.

Authorized
Providers
To ensure quality in continuing education and training programs and to increase the consumer's confidence in those organizations, which adhere to the standards, IACET established the Authorized Provider program. This program provides recognition for providers who would adhere to the criteria and are willing to have their programs assessed by the Authorized Providers Commission
IACET CEU To distinguish between the generic CEU and the CEU granted by IACET Authorized Providers, the Association restricts the use of its IACET CEU logos to providers, which are certified as "Authorized Providers" by IACET.
